missoni for target

The other day I gushed about the Lagerfeld for Impulse line. Today I am fawning over the soon-to-arrive Missoni for Target collection…the whole collection, which arrives in stores and online next Tuesday.  I have said it before and it’s true: I hate shopping. Actually, loathe would be a better word. Love fashion but I’d rather be anywhere else than the mall or a department store. Send me to the farmers market, grocery store, culinary store, book store…I’m a happy camper. But a clothing store usually stirs up a guttural reaction. Really.  The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale? I email the order in and then barely run into the store to pick up the items. That is how much I dislike clothes shopping. Having said all that though, I am SUPER excited about Missoni for Target. So much so I’ve been counting down the weeks. I’m pretty sure I’m not alone.

With a promise to maintain the same level of craftsmanship, style and quality Missoni has always exhibited in its couture and M knitwear lines, the 400 piece Target collection spans apparel for women, men and children, footwear and includes home furnishings, case goods, luggage and even a bike!  {You can view a sampling of the pieces here on the New York website.} All featuring Missoni’s signature and iconic zig zags, stripes, and abstract patterns in a wide range of striking colors. It all exudes Missoni’s vintage style with a modern twist.  I love, L.O.V.E, the women’s stacked heel shoes, several of the dresses and women’s jackets. The men’s ties are yummy, especially the mauve diagonal zig zag pattern. But the first, very first item I am bee-lining to is the swimsuit above. I don’t what you all are doing at 8 a.m. Tuesday, September 13th but I’ll be at Target!

grilled peach + fig yogurt

For whatever reason, I’ve been waking up at the crack of dawn lately. Considering insomnia constantly plagues me, this is a bad combination. So to ward off a mid morning energy plummet an early breakfast is usually in order, followed a few hours later with a morning snack. It’s fig season – yeah! I love figs.  Really.  I love peeling them and popping them as a snack.  Love them with gooey cheese, in salads, covered with chocolate and they are one of the only fruits I like cooked with savory entrees.  Had some beautiful Brown Turkey figs sitting on the counter and a lonely but lovely Frog Hollow peach.  Decided to grill both to have with some yogurt. Have no fear…I did not subject my neighbors to a morning horror show by grilling the fruit outdoors in my pjs. Used a grill pan and it worked just perfectly.  Simple, fresh ingredients for a breakfast that came together in under 5 minutes.  Just wish I had had a little granola to sprinkle over the yogurt but you work with whatcha got, and in this case, it was caramelized, sweet goodness.

Grilled Peach + Fig Yogurt
serves 4

2 figs {variety of your choice}
1 small peach
1 tbsp. canola oil
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 tbsp. light brown sugar

Cut figs into quarters and brush each side with oil. Cut peach in half, remove pit and cut each half into 4 wedges; brush each side with oil. Heat a grill or grill pan and cook sear fruit on each side over medium-high heat for 60 seconds on each side. Remove and let cool slightly. Divide yogurt into 4 bowls. Place 2 slices of fig and 2 slices of peach over each of the yogurts and sprinkle with brown sugar while still warm.

freedom is not free {thanking our military}

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We hear that statement a lot.  But it should never be taken for granted because the freedoms, liberties and values we hold dear as Americans have always come on the backs of those who have and still have the courage to lead, sacrifice and serve…and their families.  I come from a long line of servicemen and women, and civil servants who, in different capacities, support our military.  A couple of years ago, while listening to Whatever, with Jennifer Hutt and Alexis Stewart, I heard about a website called AnySoldier.com, where any member of the military could apply to receive care packages from home.  Alexis, the consummate baker, had put together great boxes of homemade treats to thank troops she did not know but simply had selected from the website.  I thought is was such a great idea, although since I’m one of the worst bakers, my treats would have to be store-bought. But life got in the way and I never really looked at the website until a couple of months ago.  And when I did, what I saw broke my heart.
The list of servicemen and women who had signed their units up to be package recipients was not long…it was huge. They were from all branches of the military serving in many different countries including theaters of war. And what they were requesting nearly made me cry.  Books, magazines, games – anything to help pass the time; healthy snacks; socks; office supplies; toiletries – soap, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, toothpaste. How could this be? After reading a handful of member pages, it became clear. Supplies and sundries carried at the post exchanges where our troops are deployed are so limited in quantity that by the time many of our service people can actually get to the store, the basics are sold out. Some troops are so geographically far from the post exchanges that getting basics for their units are hard.  We have the best armed forces in the world and those putting their lives at risk to protect us can’t even get the things you and I take for granted. Lotion and snacks are a luxury but hygiene products are a necessity.  It was time to make a big trip to Costco.
I decided to send off care packages to two units in Afghanistan, one an Air Force logistics support group and the second, an Army tactical unit.  Each got two boxes: one full of snacks and treats and the other, basics and toiletries.  The logistics unit even asked for more office supplies so they could do their jobs so they also got pens, markers, tape, post its, etc. Buying everything was the easy part; putting the packages together was the time-consuming part.  But it was well worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.  And I would encourage anyone out there wanting to do something to thank our troops to send a care package, too.
This endeavor can be a huge project but don’t be daunted.  This would be a great thing to do as a neighborhood, family, church group or school project. The costs can be divided up and the tasks of putting the boxes together shared. Regardless of what your political view on our current wars is, if you agree that our military fulfills a vital role for our country and its security, this is a wonderful way to say thank you.  Wading through the list of the Any Soldier website requests is easy; wading through all the rules for sending your gifts is a little harder so here are some tips below to help you.  Don’t forget to include a personal note.  You never know…that one handwritten note letting the troops know you’re thinking of them might just make one person’s day. Probably more.
:: Pack food items separate from toiletries and non-food products;  you’d be surprised how much the smell of something like soap can seep into even double packaged food items.
::  Place liquids like body lotion, shampoo, soap in large ziploc bags in case the original packaging becomes compromised during shipping.
::  Boxes should be smaller than 130″ in total length and girth.   The largest box I used was 20″ x 12″ x 12″ – it held a lot!
::  Boxes need to weigh less than 70 pounds.
::  Pack the boxes well, using newspaper to fill in the gaps between items so things do not get jostled around.   Use heavy duty clear or brown packing tape…and use lots of it.  I taped the tops and bottoms both vertically and horizontally then wrapped one round of tape around the overlapping tails that came down on the sides of the boxes.
::  You will need to fill out a customs form {PS Form 2976-A} for each box.  And when you do so, you’ll need to list all of the items in the box, including their value {whether or not you insure the box, which I didn’t} and their weight.  Most items have a weight listed on their packaging but a simple scale will be helpful.  The USPS’ online form for APO/FPO addresses is not working right now so if you have to get a paper form at the post office, get plenty! You can only list four items per form.  For one box I sent, three forms were needed. No problem, just fill out the main form and at the top write “Additional Forms Enclosed” and then on subsequent forms, line through the bar code and number at the top left and write next to them “Form _ of __”  {Form 2 of 3, Form 3 of 3, etc.}.  Bring all those to the post office and they will put them in a clear shipping envelope for you.
:: To avoid having the package sent back to you in case the service member you are mailing has left country, in Block #10 on the customs form check “Redirect to Address Below” and write in “Addressee’s Commander at the same address.”

Lagerfeld for Macy’s

German designer extraordinaire Karl Lagerfeld has done it again.  As the first prolific artist to create an approachable line for H&M, he has now released an amazing 45 piece collection for Macy’s Impulse department. The collection, released to select stores on August 31 but available on line, features stunning pieces ranging in price from $50 – $170. Unlike other off-the-rack, affordable collections from well-known designers , what I love about Lagerfeld’s is the line retains his avant garde edge while being suitable for everyday wear. Best known for his work as Head Designer and Creative Director for Chanel, Lagerfeld currently also designs for Fendi and his own label. While his couture pieces may not always appeal to me personally, I respect his ability to remain committed to his personal vision and style.  And his ability to celebrate a woman’s figure is amazing.  Especially in his menswear inspired pieces.  My favorite items from the Lagerfeld for Impulse collection, including the dress above, are the sleeveless turtleneck sweater {$69} and the sleeveless turtleneck tweed dress {$129}. And when the tweed zip front short sleeve shift dress becomes available…I’m buying that, too!

meatless . #36 {falafel}

Oy! I had so many posts planned starting with last Sunday but on Saturday evening, what I thought was a weird summer cold – all my joints ached – turned out to be…food poisoning! It was the single worst case of food poisoning I’ve ever had in my life, which has now happened five times. And each and every time, the culprit was a salad that did me in.  I refuse to stop eating them at restaurants but for the love of god people wash your lettuce, serve only fresh lettuce and make sure your people wash their hands. Okay, now that that rant is over, I finally felt well enough to cook today.  Truth be told, falafel is probably the last thing I would ever order in a restaurant but so many of my friends love it, so why not give it a another try? This recipe, which is a hodge-podge of ones I’ve clipped over the years, had nice depth of flavor and was not dense and chickpea heavy.  Mike had his with the classic tahini sauce and I had mine with Mama Lils peppers and schug sauce.  Each of our pitas was also filled with a little lettuce, thinly sliced cucumbers and tomatoes.  With a simple balsamic green bean, tomato, red onion and goat cheese salad, it was just what the doctor ordered! And Mike really liked it so it was a good dinner to thank him for taking care of me all weekend.

Tahini Sauce
2 cloves of garlic
½ cup tahini
¼ cup flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped
2 tbsp. lemon juice
½ cup ice-cold water
Kosher salt
Freshly ground pepper

Add all ingredients to a small food processor.  Pulse until smooth and creamy. Salt and pepper to taste. Put in an airtight container and place in the fridge until ready to use.

Schug Sauce
1 – 4 oz. can of chopped jalapeños, drained
1 cup fresh cilantro
2 ½ tbsp. canola oil
½ tsp. caraway seeds
3 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped
seeds of 2 cardamom pods, shells cracked and seeds removed
5 tbsp. water
Kosher salt

Add all ingredients to a small food processor and puree until smooth. Put in an airtight container and place in the fridge until ready to use.

Falafel
serves 4

1 – 14 oz can of chickpeas, drained
1 cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
1 tsp. flour
½ tsp. ground coriander
½ tsp. ground cumin
¼ tsp. ground fennel
3 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped
½ yellow onion, roughly diced
1 serrano chili, seeds and veins removed
2 tbsp. mint, roughly chopped
1 cup panko bread crumbs
1 ½ tsp. baking soda mixed w/1 tbsp. water
Cayenne pepper
Kosher salt
vegetable oil
2 warm pitas, cut in half

In a food processor, combine chickpeas, parsley, flour, coriander, cumin, fennel, garlic, onion, chili, mint and panko bread crumbs. Pulse slowly until combined but still coarse, about 70 pulses. Add baking soda mixture; season with salt and Cayenne to taste.  Pulse about 10 more times until mixture is combined.  Remove bowl, cover and put in the freezer for 20 minutes to set up.  Remove and using a large soup spoon, form mixture into 1 – tbsp. sized bowls or thick patties.

Using a large, tall sided pot, add enough oil so there is 2″ in depth. Using a frying thermometer to test, heat oil to 350º. Working in batches so as not to crowd the pot and significantly lower the oil temperature, fry the falafel until they float and are golden brown; about 2½-3 minutes. {I am not a huge deep fryer, so I pan fried mine since I formed patties – about 2½ minutes over medium heat on each side.} Use a slotted spoon to remove the falafel from the oil, place atop a baking cooling rack over paper towels set on a baking sheet until all the falafel are cooked.  Serve in the warm pita with the sauce and accompaniments of your choice.
